Registration Of Merchant Ships (Cargo Vessels Operating In The Caribbean Trading Area) (Safety) Regulations, reg. 112 · Revised Edition 2020
(1) While the ship is at sea, there shall be available at all times a main source of energy sufficient to operate–
(a) the radiotelephone installation within the rated power required by regulation 110; and
(b) the VHF radiotelephone installation to the rated output.
(2) A reserve source of energy shall be provided in a position as high as practicable which under all circumstances shall have sufficient capacity to operate the transmitter and receiver for at least 6h continuously under normal working conditions.
(3) Where the reserve source of energy supplies several of the radio installations mentioned in subregulation (2), its Merchant Ships (Registration) 211 capacity shall be sufficient to operate the transmitter and receiver of these installations continuously and simultaneously for at least six hours unless one switch gear permits the selective operation of the radio installations.
(4) The reserve source of energy may also be used as the main source of energy, provided that the manner of installation and use is such that these requirements are met at all times when the ship is at sea.
(5) The reserve source of energy shall be used to supply only–
(a) the radiotelephone installations; and
(b) the VHF installation.
(6) Notwithstanding the provisions of subregulation (5), the Administration may authorize the use of the reserve source of energy for the number of low-power emergency circuits which are wholly confined to the upper part of the ship such as emergency lighting on the embarkation station for survival craft,
on condition that the additional loads can be readily disconnected, and that the source of energy is of sufficient capacity to carry them.
(7) While the ship is at sea, any battery provided shall be kept charged so as to meet the requirements of this regulation and in any case shall be capable of being brought to a fully charged state within a period of 16 h.
