Laden weight

The total laden weight of any axle of any motor vehicle or trailer shall not exceed 18,000 lbs: Provided that the Department of Transport may in a particular case require that the total laden weight of any axle of a motor vehicle or trailer shall not be more than will cause a load of 500 lbs. per inch width of tyre (using the maker’s width as stamped on the tyre) even if the total laden weight then be less than allowed under the licence for that vehicle.
