Traffic signal to be obeyed

(1) Where any traffic sign, being a sign for regulating the movement of traffic or indicating the route to be followed by traffic, has been placed on or near any road in accordance with regulation 197 hereof any person driving any motor vehicle who fails to conform to the indication given by the sign shall be guilty of an offence. (2) Without prejudice to subregulation (1) above and Regulation 197 below, where any electric traffic signal Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic [CAP. 230 121 regulating the movement of traffic has been placed on or near any road, street, highway, or an intersection thereto, all traffic approaching the traffic signal shall– (a) stop when the electric traffic signal is red in colour and proceed when the electric traffic signal turns green in (b) observe at all times (by stopping or proceeding with extreme caution) the electric traffic signal when it is amber in colour, noting always that the amber colour appears immediately before the red colour in an electric traffic signal; (c) observe at all times flashing electric traffic signals which are amber or red in colour by proceeding with extreme caution or stopping: Provided that instead of stopping at an intersection as provided in paragraph (a) above, a driver may proceed with caution to turn right into the lane perpendicular to the lane he is presently travelling only under the following circumstances– (a) when the road, street or highway in which the driver is travelling is a single lane and the driver is at the front of all motor vehicles in the said lane; or (b) when the road, street or highway in which the driver is travelling has at the minimum a double lane and the driver is in the proper lane used by the motor vehicles intending to turn right at the intersection; and 122 (c) when the electric traffic signal in front of him is green or red in colour. (3) Any person who contravenes subregulation (2) above (including the proviso thereto), commits an offence and shall be liable on summary conviction to the penalty specified in regulation 229 below.
