Maintenance of equipment

All electrical stunning, auxiliary control and other equipment shall be maintained in good repair and all indicators, instruments and measuring devices shall be made available for inspection by an authorised officer at any time. (a) The authorised officer may refuse to provide inspection services at a new slaughterhouse or may suspend such at any slaughterhouse upon evidence that any animal is being slaughtered or handled therein in an inhumane manner or in a manner not in accordance with these Regulations. (b) The may withdraw inspection services from a slaughterhouse where the sanitary conditions are such as to contaminate its products or where the operator 14 Slaughter of Animals fails to destroy contaminated products as required by the Food and Drugs Act or by any other law. (c) The authorised officer may suspend the meat inspection services at a slaughterhouse with a view to prevent inhumane slaughtering or handling of animals. (d) The authorised officer shall, as soon as may be practicable, notify the operator in writing of any suspension of the meat inspection service and the reason for such suspension. (e) Any suspension under these Regulations shall remain in force until the authorised officer is satisfied that adequate steps have been taken to prevent inhumane slaughter and handling of (f) An appeal shall lie to the Minister against any suspension under these Regulations, and the Minister’s decision shall be final.
