Restrictions on punishment of children and young persons

(1) Subject to section 12 of this Act, no child shall be sentenced to imprisonment. 13 (2) No young person shall be sentenced to imprisonment if he can be suitably dealt with in any other way whether by probation, fine, committal to a place of detention, certified institution or otherwise. (3) A young person sentenced to imprisonment shall not be allowed to associate with adult prisoners. (4) In this section, the word “imprisonment” shall be read and construed as a custodial sentence in a place of detention referred to in section 13 of this Act.
